This is the classic ORPCA Three Ferries Spring Drive. We will start in Stafford (West Linn) and follow the Willamette River, crossing it three times on three different ferries before we arrive for lunch at a winery south of Salem. The route leads through river landscape, rolling wine country hills, passing bird migration habitats. Expect spring flower to be in bloom on the meadows. Please bring $15 in cash for the ferry charges – we recommend $5 and $1 bills. No credit cards are accepted.
From Stafford we go on backroads to the Canby Ferry. After crossing the river, we continue on to Champoeg State Park for a first rest stop. Then we continue to the Wheatland Ferry, where we cross the river again. Then on to Maud Williamson State Recreation Site for a second rest stop. Next, we drive through Bethel Heights wine country to Independence and on to Buena Vista County Park for a third rest stop. This leg has about 5 miles of non-paved road with a fully paved alternative route. For the final leg we cross the river a third time on the Buena Vista Ferry and follow the river north until we enter the wine country south of Salem and reach the Ankeny Winery for lunch.
